TRIAL PITTING
Trial pitting is a cost-effective ground investigation technique which enables rapid visual inspection of the ground, suitable for logging and sampling near-surface soils to characterise a site and provide valuable data for construction, environmental assessments and engineering purposes.
Also known as test-pits or trial trenches, excavations can be hand-dug or undertaken using a mechanical excavator such as a JCB 3CX or similar, fully supervised by one of our qualified Geo-environmental Engineers from a position of safety.
In addition to soil sampling for laboratory analysis, in-situ data such as hand shear vane readings and in-situ infiltration testing to BRE 365 can be undertaken to allow geotechnical assessment and drainage design.

LOGGING & SUPERVISION SERVICES
CJ Associates employs a team of highly qualified and experienced geo-environmental engineers and project managers, holding SSSTS and SMSTS certification for site supervision, enabling CJA to act as Principal Contractor and manage all aspects of CDM for the fieldworks elements of ground investigation projects.
Where required our engineers provide detailed logging services to the latest standards including BS5930:2015+A1 (2020), BS EN ISO 14688 (2018) and BS EN ISO 14689 (2017) and others as per our Clients’ specification.
A range of different reports can be provided including desk studies, factual and interpretive reports, and geotechnical digital data can be provided in AGS and other formats to suit our Clients’ needs.

MONITORING SERVICES
On completion of drilling, many boreholes undertaken by CJ Associates can be installed with instrumentation to further understand the gas and groundwater regime on a site. Common instrumentation types include gas and water monitoring wells, standpipe piezometers, vibrating wire piezometers and others such as inclinometers for slope stability projects.
CJA’s environmental monitoring technicians are well placed to undertake post fieldwork monitoring including:
- Ground gas monitoring using GA5000 or LFM436 portable gas analysers.
- VOC screening using Photocheck / Tiger Photo-Ionisation Detectors.
- Water level monitoring.
- Submersible water level loggers.
- Multi-parameter water quality monitoring.
- Low flow groundwater sampling.
- Inclinometer monitoring.
- Vibrating wire piezometer measurements.
- Variable head permeability testing.
