WINDOWLESS SAMPLING
Windowless sampling is a fast and cost-effective way of sampling near-surface superficial deposits, typically up to 6 m bgl; however, deeper holes are possible in favourable ground conditions. Our windowless sample rigs offer a versatile solution to better understanding the ground profile and are often utilised by our clients as part of contamination assessments or where access may be unsuitable for larger plant. We are able to cover a lot of ground using this technique, and in favourable conditions, we can achieve around five to six boreholes within a single day. This makes the technique a particularly cost-effective way for installing shallow gas and groundwater installations for subsequent monitoring.
In recent years, windowless sampling has become a popular technique for ground investigations on the rail infrastructure, as their manoeuvrability makes them suitable for sites with challenging access or time constraints.

RIG FLEET
Windowless sampling is a percussive drilling technique whereby a hydraulically driven drive chain and drop weight are utilised to advance sample barrels into the ground. The samples are recovered within plastic liners which can be logged onsite by one of our ground engineering professionals. The compact and manoeuvrable crawler-mounted design enables our rigs to access even the most challenging sites. The windowless sampling rigs are better suited to drilling clay and sand; however, we can provide the option of switching to dynamic probing to obtain parameters of coarser deposits such as gravels.
Our rigs come fully equipped with calibrated SPT hammers for in-situ standard penetration testing and casing is also provided to prevent the hole collapse so that the maximum depths can be achieved.
DANDO TERRIER
CJ Associates offer Dando Terrier windowless sample rigs, which are operated by our NVQ 2 level land drilling professionals.
Our rigs are mobilised to site on a plant trailer towed by 4×4.
